FAQs
MediaAMP Frequently Asked Questions
Why focus on democracy and governance, economics and business practices, climate change and the environment?
Because if we get these right, we’ll all be better off. Looking at it another way, if democracy and governance are threatened, if we continue to let the gap between the rich and non-rich grow, and if we don’t address climate change and environmental degradation—we are in serious trouble as a species.
Canadians recognize threats to democracy posed by disinformation campaigns, the evolving use and power of AI, and the growing distrust of politicians, businesses and media. We understand the growing gap between rich and poor leads to more people in need and a less stable society. And we experience climate change and environmental damage in real time—impacts that will only worsen if we do not act soon. Regardless of our political leanings, these are issues Canadians generally want to see addressed.
The hard part is deciding which stories to amplify. At this point, we feature stories that:
- relate to one of the three issue areas and is current news,
- have the potential for broad, non-partisan Canadian support,
- point to concrete actions that government or business leaders can take.
Why focus on media stories?
Many non-governmental organizations work hard to get their issues in the news. When media picks up a topic, leaders pay more attention and the likelihood of getting action increases.
MediaAMP starts from what’s already in the news. When an issue gets media traction, it’s time to act! If it’s a positive story, we amplify it to encourage more constructive actions. If it’s a negative story, we make sure decision-makers know Canadians are aware and looking for a response.
Good, trustworthy media is one of the pillars of an accountable society. This is especially true in an age of fragmented and easily manipulated news sources. By amplifying good reporting, we are supporting this cornerstone of a well-functioning society.
What media sources does MediaAMP feature?
At this time, we are primarily looking at mainstream media in Canada. One reason is that business and political leaders are more sensitive to mainstream news. Another is that with limited staff time, we can’t review everything. We are not monitoring news coverage in social media.
We also keep our eye on alternative Canadian media and a few quality international sources such as The Guardian and The New York Times. See a list of key media sources.
How does MediaAMP impact decisions?
Impact starts by selecting stories currently “making news.” We add a short abstract in case stories can’t be downloaded. We highlight the one action that can be taken now and strategically choose people who can take that action—or who influence those who can. Many of these email recipients do not typically hear from Canadians, so you’ll get their attention!
The personal message you add is key. Messages are most effective when they are positive and respectful, express your feelings, and focus on one concrete action. It’s also helpful to ask for a response. See MediaAMP Tips.
Your postal code is used to copy your elected representatives as appropriate. Any responses go to your email address. This is democracy in action—citizens talking directly to government and business decision-makers and their elected officials! MediaAMP makes it easy to have your voice heard.
Decision-makers are suddenly receiving emails from Canadians on issues highly relevant to them.
- The story could be news to them—they are busy people.
- More likely, they are aware of the story—you are letting them know that Canadians are very aware and want action.
- Direct messages from Canadians on a story currently in the news could be the timely support they need to take constructive action.
How often will I receive MediaAMP alerts?
About once a week. It depends on how many actionable stories come up in the news. Of course, you will decide how many MediaAMP actions you take. We hope it is all of them!
Does my email come from me or MediaAMP?
Your email shows your name and return email address, but to ensure it is received and not filtered as spam, it comes from myemail@mediaamp.ca. Any response from the recipient will go to your email address. You’ve started a conversation!
Will my data be shared?
No. We’re not in the data business.
Why amplify stories through MediaAMP? Why not do it as individuals?
Individuals sending their own emails is encouraged!
MediaAMP works hard to ensure the right people get your email—people with influence. We also list one concrete action that can be taken now; we do this by working with issue experts and insiders who understand what’s needed in the moment to get change.
Another advantage of MediaAMP is joining other Canadians in raising your voice. There is power in numbers.
