Climate Engagement Canada (CEC) looked at 40 of Canada’s
largest corporate emitters and found a mixed bag. Most are
improving their climate-related disclosures, but none are
backing up decarbonization strategies with spending
commitments.
Of the companies reviewed, Empire Co. Ltd. (Sobeys, Safeway)
and Canadian National Railway Co. had the best scores, having
set net-zero emissions targets with medium and long-term
goals to reach the targets.
Companies with the lowest scores included two fuel
distribution companies Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (Circle
K) and Superior Plus Corp. (Superior Propane), and two
Calgary-based oil and gas companies, ARC Resources Ltd. and
Whitecap Resources Ltd. Stelco Holdings Inc. (steel, Hamilton)
had the worst score, receiving no marks in any category.
Patricia Fletcher, of the Responsible Investment Association, a
founding CEC organization, states, “You set your targets and
your goals, but are your actions supporting them? That’s really
where the rubber is going to hit the road with all of this.”
To: companies that are taking action. Encourage that progress.
Cc: companies that are lagging. Ask them to do set concrete targets
to reduce emissions and to sufficiently fund those efforts. Your MP
