The Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism annually tracks media consumption and trust worldwide. Their 2024 report shows a continued decline in media trust in Canada, with only 38 per cent of Canadians trusting the news in 2024, down from 40 per cent in 2023 and 55 per cent in 2016.

For comparison, media trust in the United States remains lower and relatively constant at around 32%. The gap between the two countries is closing, with indications that it will continue to do so. Statistics Canada reports that young Canadians aged 15 to 24 are only half as likely to report high levels of trust in media as Canadians aged 65 years and older. (2)
